INTERVIEW WITH Elizabeth Suggs – Collective Darkness: A Horror Anthology

INTERVIEW WITH Elizabeth Suggs

Collective Darkness: A Horror Anthology

Can you tell us in a couple of lines about your anthology?

Collective Darkness is more than just an anthology, it has built a community of writers, editors, narrators, and readers. When you read Collective Darkness you’ll be reading the heart and soul of each slightly disturbed author.

The idea of “being afraid of the dark” like when we were kids is touching because we have ALL been there. Have you been inspired by any personal fear yourself?

Oh, boy, yes! I’m actually pretty scared of the dark. Sometimes I even turn off the lights and run under the covers.

Could you choose the most disturbing story?

That’s a tough one because many stories are disturbing in different ways. If I HAD to pick, then I would say the first story “Feast.” It deals with a mother and daughter relationship and then a toxic love affair. It’s unexpected—to say the least.

What are the readers going to find in the book?

They’re going to find a myriad of different stories from authors of all different backgrounds describing a horrific darkness. This anthology is great for all types of readers, especially readers new into horror because there all types of horror.

Hellboy or Ironman?

Hellboy all the way.

What kind of horror fan is the book for?

Those who like psychological horror. Though there are all types of horror in this anthology, most of our authors had some element of the psychological in their story.

How did you get the idea for this anthology?

It actually came into being for two reasons: 1. My love for horror and 2. After I started a writing group to help writers hone in on their skills. An anthology was a great way to develop our talents.

What is the best and the worst about putting together all this work?

Time. I had no idea how long it would take or how much time I would need to format, edit, promote, and more. But this is something I can fix. The next anthology Collective Fantasy will run smoother.

Tell us a bit about your team!

Amazing, hardworking writers and editors. These are the sort of people I could work with forever and never grow tired of them. They have put so much in this project. I couldn’t ask for a better group.

Coffee or wine?

Coffee, though wine is nice on occasion.

Where can readers find you and what is the best way of contacting you?

You can find us at www.EditingMee.com and www.CollectiveDarkness.com

You can also contact me personally at liz@editingmee.com

Are you open for more submissions?

Not for Collective Darkness 2020, but we do have Collective Fantasy opened for submissions until Oct. 10 and we will have a second Collective Darkness opened for submissions hopefully by early next year for a publication date of 2022. The plan is to have Collective Darkness and Collective Fantasy every other year.

Do you have any current projects?

Yes! We have the Collective Fantasy anthology in the works. Submissions are opened until Oct. 10.

What is the funniest thing about your anthology?

During the filming of the Collective Darkness anthology book trailer, we were in a vacant room at a mall. The room didn’t have a ceiling, and we used a fog machine for the entire shoot almost constantly. So at the end of the shoot, we actually freaked out a few restaurants in the area. They thought the room was on fire! We even had to talk one of the owners out of calling the fire department. That was a close call.

Why should readers choose your book?

Because this isn’t just about darkness, it’s also a labor of love. We took our time with each story to give you a taste of all things horrific.

Do you have a message for the readers?

Submit to our next anthology! There’s still time. This one is a fantasy, and genre blend of horror and fantasy is totally welcome! I’d love it, in fact.

Thank you!

Thank YOU!

As a child, did you hide under your blankets when you were scared of the dark?
After reading some of the scariest stories from new and up-and-coming authors, we won’t blame you if you start hiding again. Take a journey with us into the twisted mind of horror.
“The Fallout” travels through the unknown, while “Feast” will make you never want to love again.
Read these and many more stories to know what it truly means to be afraid of the dark.
