FLASH TERROR 250 Contest – “Winter Vacay” by Kerry E.B. Black

Though bundled within layers of thick clothing and huddled in a stylish winter coat, Caitlin shivered. She hated the cold, would much rather be sweltering in the sunshine. But she endured for her family. They enjoyed the slopes and snowball battles while Caitlin hunkered deeper into her winterwear, unable to feel her toes.

“I’m going inside,” she called, disgruntled.

An icy patch near the door sent her skidding. Struggling to regain her footing, her arms windmilled, and she slid, helpless, into a sunken, side stairwell. Banged and bruising, dizzy and sore, she wrestled to her feet. The door opened into a sauna-hot spa.

“This’s more like it,” Caitlin loosened her outerwear.

“Here for your personalized spa experience?” A uniformed employee smiled until dimples graced her cheek.

“I fell.” Caitlin rubbed her bumped head.

“The hot tub’ll take away your aches.”

“Great.” Caitlin followed to a cedar-lined room with a hot tub bubbling in its center.

“Shall I play some music? Bring a hot toddy?”

“Yes, please!”

Caitlin climbed in and stretched out. The warm, bubbling waters enveloped her, and Caitlin dozed in the glorious warmth.

She dreamed of a frog in a soup, unaware of its imminent demise.

Panicked, sweaty, she woke, bobbing in boiling water like a vegetable in a stew. Her flesh loosened from her bones, with only her neck and head intact. “Help, she screamed, but her family played outside. “Help!” she cried, but Vivaldi reached a crescendo.

Caitlin hated the cold, but the heat was killer.
