With only one remaining seat in the subway car, the middle-aged man sat down next to the young man.
Seated, he asked with a friendly smile. “Isn’t it weird how things work out?”
The young man looked at him. “I, I guess so?”
“I mean, you just never know who some people are. Take myself, for instance. I could be a serial killer who preys upon young men and eats their bodies in a cannibalistic ritual.” He winked at the young man. “All the body parts except the nose and ears; they’re just too damn chewy. Anyway, I catch a last-minute subway ride and…here you are.”
The young man responded with excitement. “And…and I could be an interdimensional alien who visits your world and eats humans because they’re one of the best food sources in the galaxy!”
They both laughed and felt the subway car slowing down for its next stop.
“This is my stop.” The young man rose from his seat. Making his way to the surface sidewalk, he hurried to the alleyway shortcut to his apartment.
He sensed a presence, and a gun jabbed his side. The man from the subway. “Sorry kid, but I AM that serial killer.”
The alleyway empty, the young man smiled. “What a coincidence.”
His concealed disintegration weapon vaporized the man from the neck down; the head floating momentarily, then falling to the pavement.
Lifting the head, he savored its smell. “Not like the nose and ears? Why, those are the best parts!”
