“What was that?” I hiss in the darkness.
“Probably next door,” mumbles my husband.
“It sounded like it came from the kitchen,” I reply. “Can’t you take a look?”
“Go back to sleep, hun,” hubby mutters, and then I hear those almost silent snores he swears he doesn’t do.
“I guess I’ll go then,” I grumble. “Check on the kids.”
My frustration doubles when he mumbles something else in reply.
My hand is on our bedroom doorknob when I hear the noise again. Call it instinct, or panic, either way, the sound propels me into the lounge room and quickly past our front door. The door is ajar, I am certain hubby told me he’d locked it in his before-bed routine. The kitchen is a blur as I speed through it, but my keen eyes notice that the carving knife is missing from its block. So too is the fork with the long prongs. I check the kids’ rooms, one, and then the other, breathing a sigh as I hear them sleeping soundly.
Making my way back through the kitchen I close the draw. The front door is shut and locked, my husband and I will have words in the morning. I crawl back into bed beside him, noticing the silence. I elbow him, still no response. That’s when I feel the stickiness all over his chest and detect the smell of blood. The walk-in robe light flicks on. I see a figure dressed in black, knife and fork ready.
