FLASH TERROR 250 Contest – “Finding Karl” by Dawn DeBraal

Laney’s brother Karl had been missing for months after their house went through remodeling. The police kept returning to the construction crew, but without a body, it was hard to pin a murder on anyone. The cops hinted maybe Karl might have run away after a fight with their older brother, Jake. That hurt Jake’s feelings and made him an angry man.

The mystery surrounding Karl’s disappearance haunted Laney’s family every day. Clues no longer came in. There were no phone calls leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Karl’s death. How could her brother disappear without a trace?

Laney saw Jake outside splitting wood, something he had taken up with a passion ever since their brother disappeared. It helped Jake dispel his anger.

She came out the back door to see her brother standing near the cement slab the construction crew had poured for a garage, but after Karl’s disappearance, the building was never built. All the money went to private detectives trying to find the missing boy. She wanted to talk to Jake about her dream last night, hearing her brother call her name and seeing him trapped in a tight place.

Laney called to her brother, watching him bring the large splitting maul down hard, jumping back when the heavy ax glanced off the wood stump, hitting the slab and splitting a large chunk of cement. She’d never forget Jake’s screams. The denim material of Karl’s jacket poking from the crack was unmistakable.
