FLASH TERROR 250 Contest – The Tunnel by Zoe Burgess

The claustrophobia was dripping from the walls as each shallow breath became more coarse and panicked. How long would this tunnel last and what was this creeping dread? They felt pins and needles like splinters, sharp and violent burrowing into skin, digging and squirming beneath the surface frustratingly hard to ignore. Something itched in their eyes, rubbing them only making the eyes sore and swollen their vision blurred and distorted with pin pricks of light. Dancing orbs of colour that flitted into sight but just out of range to touch, disappearing when cold fingers reached out.

The smell was starting to grow more intense, at first damp and musty, maybe stagnant water or fungus but now it became pungent, rotten, practically crawling down their throat and causing a slight gagging reflex. The walls denser, the tunnel slightly moist now with a wet unnatural aroma threatening nausea that only drove them more uncertain, more on edge as the pounding headache of something almost alive writhed just below their temple.

They would go mad soon if this didn’t let up. They started to scratch at their skin for relief, sore lines made from torn fingernails appearing as tiny droplets of blood beaded the angry welts. The tunnel was chocking the life out of them as it descended to its putrid depths, continuing endlessly towards the sound of a drumbeat pulsing wildly in their skull as they took bloodstained fingers to their face and clawed at their eyes in desperation and unavoidably madness.
