Review of Alan Perkin’s “Beware the Demons Betrayed” by E. N. Dahl

At roughly 440 pages, “Beware the Demons Betrayed” is only the start of what’s sure to be an epic sorcery-fueled adventure. Most of this book is set in mid-1990’s Colorado, but there are passages ranging as far back as the 1340s, each detailing the sordid affairs of a group of people who crossed paths with a power they should never have dared to even speak of.

This story has a surprisingly innocuous beginning, following Lorissa and Craig as they buy a new home. Everything goes to hell pretty quickly thereafter. Between the pacing and evocative language with which Perkins writes, this story moves quickly. In fact, it’s downright gripping.

There are a few passages in the beginning that might seem like diversions, with the narration dipping to explore the life and times of new characters who, at first, have little to do with the main characters. These subplots soon weave back into the novel’s tapestry in surprising ways that are equal parts intricate and farcical, with a Shakespearean level of “Oh god, why are you here, and why now?” A few characters wrapped up too quickly for my taste, and I did have a few unanswered questions, but this is only the first of a series. I’m sure more will be revealed in time.

Suffice it to say, Perkins is a powerful writer, and for all this writing of people using bewitching words, he appears to have an entrancing effect as well. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
