Synopsis

An isolated island community experiences miraculous events – and frightening omens – after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest.

By now, you have heard of the Netflix horror flick Midnight Mass. You may have also heard that some people loved it, and some hated it. Either way, it is a movie that will grate against your religious beliefs. You may turn it off. However, it is worth a go once you get through the initial chill.

This movie starts in a very interesting way. Mike Flanagan, the producer sets the tone in a way that one would not expect. Crocket Island is a small community and home to a man named Riley Flynn. At the beginning of the movie, we see Flynn praying on the side of the road of car crash. We soon learn he is sentenced to prison for DUI/manslaughter. The face of the woman he killed remains with him throughout the film. Upon his release, he heads home to the island and tries to piece his life together. But soon we learn that things are happening on that island that are both miraculous and sinister.

The storytelling on this one is one that you have to wait for it. It is a slow starter. You are introduced to the cast in a methodical way. In some ways, the people on the island seem cursed. Everyone’s back story has a tragedy that ties them to the island. The local priest is away on a trip paid for by the local parishioners. Something in the line of a last trip for an ailing man. But instead of him returning to the church, he is allegedly sick on the mainland and a new priest takes his place.

Once the new priest steps in, strange things start to occur, both good and bad. We soon learn that the priest is more than just a stand in. We also learn that he has brought an “angel” back with him to the island. This is the part that will grid against your religious soul. But you just have to get through it. Once this series takes off, it is buckle up time.
