DARK POETRY – ‘The realness of a broken you’ by Tina McFarlane

A Barbie doll smile to hide
faint scars
so slight they go unnoticed
‘til sprinkled in the bitter salt of self-hate
that flavours every morsel
of this
your favourite dish

You are aware
of this image you carry
that false narrative
of social graces and fair places
hiding the truth
of tragic consequences
and unfulfilled dreams

You drink this concoction of
foul-smelling joy for the world
who sees and feels
and asks for more

But I see it
this image
the real deal
taped and wrapped in shiny cellophane
feeling like a dime-store Christmas gift

just stick a bow on it
so no one realizes that it’s already broken

I know this you
who hides before the cameras
while keeping your truth
locked away
for your own protection

And I wonder
how long it will take
before you realize
that you have lost the key
