Step outside
on shattered glass
and broken rock
where every step
makes you feel
too scared to move forward
doubt’s frigid wind
causes sweat
to bead on your brow
and blind you
as you seek to find
an easier road ahead
it’s so much better to stay inside
wrapped in blankets
of status quo
warmed by a hearth
of monotony
but in time
this also tires
uncomfortable heat
of routine
forces you to throw
off those layers
as you stretch
and realize
that you’ve become
stiff and sore from apathy
so you will continue on
fear beats heartbeat
against your chest
because where you are
is where you should be
**Personal note for this poem
I chose this checkmate image for this poem because when I read it I can feel —and share, the feeling of surrender which comes from exhaustion when you just give up for the time to take you away.
