“The Blood Lights” by Elaine Pascale – “She vows to know the secrets of the lights. Even if it means unleashing a world-wide epidemic…”

The Blood Lights are the last thing you’ll see…

They victimize all…

Jezzie Mitchell is in anguish; with her brother’s murder still on her mind, she’s noticed strange behavior among the girls in the residential treatment center where she works. Is there a connection between the contagion on Cape Cod and the deadly Bahamas vacation that changed her life?

Jezzie reaches out to former lover Lou Collins, a scholar who has chased proof of the lights for decades. Will he be able to solve the mystery of the lights in time?

Intensely competitive, reporter Bridgette Collins knows the lights are a way to secure fame in her career. And while it’ll put the final nail into the coffin of her ex-husband’s career, she vows to know the secrets of the lights. Even if it means unleashing a world-wide epidemic…

Lightning interview with Elaine

What will the reader find in your book?
The book is a zombie story that takes place on Cape cod. There is an infection that only affects women. I am interested in the cultural perception of women’s hunger. When I say hunger I am referring to not only appetite but hunger for power and sex etc.
What inspired you, what was the seed?
I write horror that has a feminist slant.  The Blood Lights is a zombie story but it focuses on women as the source of violence. I am interested in women’s relationship to food and hunger. I feel that our culture perpetuates the idea that women should have small appetites, and I mean that in all realms-food, sex, power.

An interesting factoid about The Blood Lights is that it is based on a true story.  My husband, my cousin and I were sitting on the beach late one night, enjoying some adult beverages when an odd, oblong-shaped light appeared above the ocean. It wasn’t the moon and it wasn’t an airplane.  It just hovered there for an unreasonably long amount of time, and even appeared to be moving closer to where we sat.  To this day, we have no explanation for what it was, so I built this story around that.

What was the hardest / most disturbing part to write?

The hardest part two write for me was probably just knowing when to end. I am a bit of a word nerd and will labor over the language of the writing for probably too long.

Do you have words of wisdom about writing that you want to pass on to novelists and writers out there who are just starting out? (Part of the interview run by “Sirens Call” with the author)

I would recommend enjoying the process. Writing should be about exploring curiosities.  Too often writers put so much pressure on themselves to write “The Great American Novel” or make a lot of money. First, if you look at famous novelists, most did not set out to be famous novelists. They simply wrote because they had a compulsion to write. Second, no one is making money from writing! Many writers that I know who are extremely talented, and well received, have other careers in order to survive. If there is an urgency inside of you to write, then write. If you are writing for wealth or fame, you may want to consider other options.
