“Reach” Dark Poetry by Tina McFarlane

I watched you fade
as I fell
a pained acceptance
of how I end

Will you want to reach me?
Will you try?
Can you understand how I feel?

I want to believe that you do

That you too struggle
to keep from falling
but it’s hard to see
when all around me

is nothingness

I look at the rift
that lies between us

I wish there had been a way
I could have reached across
and grabbed your hand
stopped you from
falling over the edge

instead
I could only watch
as you fell
see the fear in your eyes
as you disappeared
into the dark

I don’t know if
I have a line long enough
to reach
and pull you out

So, instead
I will jump
and follow you in

and share this void with you

hoping that
the faded light
between us
will shine enough
to bring us home
