Quick Horror Thought: HUSKER by Marc W. Johnson

There are many reasons why I loved this book.

First of all, even being something that makes some readers uncomfortable, the present tense. Perhaps, it might be a bit unsettling at first if you’re not used to it, but if you give it a go, you’ll see it makes the story shuddering and very agile. Almost like halfway between narration and a theatre piece. Something different, why not giving it a chance?

The psychopath: Johnson’s writing is stunningly natural, and the disturbed minds he creates walk into your mind very easily. He doesn’t fall on cliches and gives you only the necessary information for you to follow the character’s steps (can you imagine walking right after a killer with a knife in his hand? imagine no more, the author takes you through it just starting the book)

Memories, flashbacks and even melodies trigger this psyche that will make the whole story tremble. But… is he only a psychopath? Johnson has much more prepared for you.

When I started this book, I had to stop to buy the paperback and go on with it in my hands. I was enjoying it too much to read if from a screen.

The police scenes are not tedious and they’re disturbingly real: no filters.

Let’s be clear, this book is not for everyone, because it’s full of extreme elements and the start is very intense. But if you just relax and enjoy the ride, you’ll see Johnson has filled the story with winks and clues that will show a very complex web at the end. It’s one of those books that satisfies you and you can turn the last page with a smile.
