Quick Horror Movie Review – The Haunting in Connecticut by Peter Cornwell

Honestly, I have been disappointed so many times with exorcism-like kind of films and I thought this one was going to be another one.

But it wasn’t.

I fell upon it because in Spanish is called “Exorcism” in Connecticut.

The story is not the average one (THANK YOU). A regular family but, with the older son very ill, he’s got a very aggressive cancer. The hospital is so far away, they have to rent a house half the way. That house is obviously (it’s a horror movie after all, right?) very cheap and so easy to rent.

Matt, aka Kyle Gallner, makes a wonderful performance. As he’s ill, he sees things in the house from second one. I don’t like giving spoilers away, but I can say the thread goes around this house being an old funerary, his owner running divination sessions for the relatives of the dead.

The plot is shuddering and the storyline runs smoothly. It’s not what you expect. The centre of the story is about compassion and the souls in that building are looking for relief.

Virginia Madsen, the mother, works wonderfully. You can feel her suffering and fear for losing his boy.

What I loved it’s that there’s no annoying denial-character who is always trying to convince everyone nothing is happening. Really? That’s a horror movie, begone.

The thread is built around the love everyone feels for the dying Matt, and the love he himself feels for the main lost soul in the building, who was already tortured by the monster living decades ago in the house.

Martin Donovan, the father, also plays an amazing role. A man unable to handle his feelings of fear and loss, but led by the need of protecting his family.

This movie is as sad as perturbing. Sorrow is the glue that joins it all together.

I enjoyed it so much and I would recommend it.
