MUSIC OF THE MACABRE: CD Review By Matt Boiselle

Composed by George Streicher

If you’re anything like me (jeez, I hope NONE OF YOU are like me), you realize how much music can amplify any given situation, be it a special occasion, or something as simple as having the tunes cranked up in the car on the way to work. However, it’s the holidays that I feel get the most beneficial rewards from a specific kind of aural entertainment – enter the Autumnal equinox and the most glorious day of the year: HALLOWEEN.

Some may be content with decorations and candy strewn about…a litany of horror movies at their disposal to complement their spook-tacular displays – but I feel that with the correct accompaniment of orchestral reinforcement, your chilling manifestations of visual fright has now been given new life. I’ve found what I needed for my Halloween 2023 soundtrack, and I simply had to bellow to my fellow nightcrawlers: you need to pick up “MUSIC OF THE MACABRE” which is composed by George Streicher, who was more than generous enough to provide me not only a streaming link but a physical copy of his latest tour de force.

Streicher himself is a self-described lover of Halloween, and he used the memories of his childhood during All Hallows Eve to fuel the charge behind this composition, offering up this glorious assortment of eerie tracks that were designed for the “eternal trick-or-treaters.” With robust and powerful work from The Budapest Scoring Orchestra & Choir and a bevy of insanely talented soloists, the listing of product here is A-grade from beginning to end, and when the first track “Among The Headstones” fires up, you know you’re going to be in for a haunting good time. As the labyrinth of symphonious precision slithers through your speakers, you’re reminded of cool Autumn evenings, lit pumpkins on doorsteps, and the general feeling of dread that fills the air…in a good way, of course!

I could break down every single piece on this collection, but I feel that it would be taking away from your enjoyment of listening to it for yourself, and if there was a drawback to this presentation, it would be that it wasn’t long enough – hell, I’m a junkie for this stuff, so call me greedy. I’ll simply have to start over on track #1 and run it all back again – it’s that worth it. In closing, do yourself a solid, spooky favor and hop on over to musicmacabre.com and get to ordering – unfortunately the vinyl is sold out, but there’s still CDs, digital downloads and even cassettes available!

What in the name of Samhain are you waiting for? Unshackle yourself from that sacrificial stone you’ve been tethered to and grab what will surely be the soundtrack to an unforgettable Halloween this year!

At the tender age of 6, Matt was indoctrinated into the horror genre by his mother, who asked him to sit down and watch "The Exorcist" with her - ever since then, it's been a blood-soaked, neon-lit, fever dream of an existence. "You don't make horror...horror makes you."

(Can't remember who came up with this quote, but he was probably off-kilter like I am).
