London After Midnight: A Haunting Audio Movie Revival from 1927

In the realm of audio entertainment, “London After Midnight” emerges as a true masterpiece, offering listeners a thrilling blend of mystery, horror, and gothic intrigue. Acclaimed international film and TV actor Art Malik, best known for his recent role in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake, steps into the iconic shoes of Detective Edward Burke, originally portrayed by the legendary Lon Chaney. With this remarkable cast and a gripping storyline, “London After Midnight” takes us on a haunting journey that will send shivers down your spine.

The story weaves together elements of murder mystery, vampire thriller, and gothic ghost tale, creating a captivating narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The plot revolves around businessman Sir James Hamlin’s quest to uncover the dark secrets hidden within the Balfour mansion, a place left in disrepair since the tragic suicide of Roger Balfour five years earlier. As the evidence begins to point towards the mansion’s inhabitants being vampires linked to that fateful night, Detective Edward Burke, a family friend and Scotland Yard investigator, arrives to unearth the truth. What unfolds is a mystery of an entirely different nature, one that will challenge the very core of your beliefs.

What makes “London After Midnight” even more extraordinary is its historical context.

The original silent movie, released in 1927, was a massive box office success, grossing over $1 million at the time. The enigmatic “Man in the Beaver Hat” from the original film became a horror icon, influencing the designs of creatures and villains in modern horror hits like “The Babadook” (2014) and “The Black Phone” (2021). However, tragedy struck when the last known copy of “London After Midnight” was lost forever in the 1965 MGM Vault Fire, leaving cinephiles yearning for its revival.

Enter the creative minds behind “London After Midnight,” Lance Axt, Jack Bowman, and Kenton Hall, operating under their banners Pocket Universe Productions (US), AudioMarvels® (UK), and Monkey Basket Entertainment (UK). THE CREATIVES:

LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT is a co-production of AUDIOMARVELS® and POCKET UNIVERSE PRODUCTIONS in association with MONKEY BASKET ENTERTAINMENT.

The US producer for Pocket Universe Productions is LANCE ROGER AXT, who co-adapted the script from the original silent movie screenplay and provided dialogue edits.

Lance says: “My history with dramatic adaptation actually goes back to my days in college, witnessing Eduardo Galeano and Dostoevsky presented on stage, and being a part of the wildest adaptation of Moby Dick I think has ever trod the boards. The challenge? Taking those pieces that people say “can’t be adapted” and doing exactly that, and doing it well. My company Pocket Universe has been doing that for years with The X-Files (television), Starstruck (the original stage play), and Titanium Rain and The Perhapanauts (comic book series). Can’t turn a TV show into an audio drama? Done. Can’t turn a comic book into an audio drama? Won awards for doing it.

The UK Producer for AudioMarvels® is JACK BOWMAN, who also co-directs.

Jack says: “As soon as I discovered there was an opportunity to not only resurrect LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT but also realised we could use the best of our skills to bring it back in a way where it could play in the ultimate picture house, the imagination, then I knew it had to be explored.

“First, a conversation with Lance Roger Axt, at Pocket Universe Productions about whether we could do this… and then a wider one with Kenton Hall sealed the deal that it might be possible and should do this… but the answer to that all hinged on the script. Turning this lost, silent classic, the Holy Grail of missing movie media, LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, into something that would work as a full-cast audio movie… what a task. However, when I got the first draft from Kenton and Lance, I couldn’t believe it. I was lost in it for hours on end. I knew now we could make this work, had to find a way to make it work, and we could, in turn, at last, allow the whole global horror community to enjoy a wonderful, faithful reimaging of something we’ve all dreamed of experiencing, as horror fans and cinephiles, for the first time.

The UK Producer for Monkey Basket is co-adapter/co-director KENTON HALL who also contributes to the original score.

“One of the things that excites me most as a writer, other than free-flowing coffee and the promise of semi-regular payment, is taking part in projects that scare me.

“LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT managed that on several fronts. First of all, the original film has such a rich and, in some ways tragic history; there is a certain amount of fan expectation in any attempt to persuade it from the grave. Thankfully, that’s the kind of pressure I enjoy, although I have been advised by my physicians to stop saying that sort of thing.

“Secondly, Jack Bowman only ever asks me to do things if they are going to be a) difficult and b) impossible to turn down. That’s just his way.

“Thirdly, once I had stopped swooning long enough to co-write the script with the gentleman and scholar that is Lance Roger Axt, we managed to assemble such an extraordinary cast that it would have been easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer level of talent on offer. Especially when I found myself plying my acting and directing (with the peerless Jack) trades amongst them. But they were such brilliant people to work with, across the board, that everyone’s game was raised. Basically, it was a joyous, terrifying experience and I only hope you enjoy and are terrified by it in equal measure.”
