La Llorona: not a legend, but a real monster.

Everyone in the horror community has heard about this “myth”, La Llorona, which means “The Crying Woman.”

Well, I’m here to tell you it’s not a legend, but a real apparition that has been haunting terrified people since the year 1500.

In ancient Mexico, right before Hernan Cortés invaded and took the great Tenochtitlán, what the civilization thought was the goddess Cihuacóatl, started rising from the dark deep waters of the Texcoco lake.

It was terrifying. Families fleed from her sorrowful crying to the nearest temple and asked why to the skies. Great devastation hovered over them and the gods knew, darkness was the only ocean ahead.

They say her weeping was so raucous that it tore off the souls of those who had the misfortune of hearing her broken voice.

My children!!!! My children!!! Where am I going to take them? Where am I going to hide them?! My children!!!

Oh, but her children had worse monsters to run away from… than her.

Their oracles (kept in manuscripts), said this:

Strange men, wiser and older than us, will come from the East and will subjugate your people and yourself, and you and yours will be of many tears and great sorrows and that your race will disappear devoured and our gods humiliated by other more powerful gods.

Gods more powerful than our God Huitzilopochtli, and the Great Destroyer Tezcatlipoca and our formidable gods of war and blood? Moctezuma asked, lowering his head with fear and humility.

This is what the predictions say, that is why the Cihuacoatl wanders through the Anahuac crying and dragging sorrows, screaming so that those who know how to hear can hear, the misfortunes that will soon come to the Empire.

But that didn’t stop her. Since then, she’s been crawling through the darkest nights, waiting for people in the crossways and in the humid areas, she’s looking for “her children”. What children though? The old stories tell us she was warning the entire civilization of the horrors that came upon them.

Others say, she’s not allowed into the gates of after death until she finds the souls she’s looking for.

Is it possible that hundreds of people misheard her? It doesn’t seem probable…

They say her yelling is demolishing, shredding her throat at every take of air. Something terrifying you don’t want to hear.
