INTERVIEW with ERIC KAPITAN – When you want something bad enough, you get it done no matter what.

What was the first title you worked on?

The very first book I worked on was titled Darkness: Poems of Extreme Horror.  It was a collection of horror poetry I had written over the years.

Can you describe yourself in a couple of lines?

Loves telling stories and making people think. Has a dark imagination but is a gentle person.

What inspires you?

Everything inspires me! Music, books, films. I find inspiration in a lot of different things. Sometimes I’ll be driving down the road and an idea for a story will pop In my head.

Do you have an opinion about the debate “self-publishing or going through a press”?

I think neither are wrong ways to get your book out there. Sadly, with self-publishing, there is a stigma. Many people think that books that are self-published are usually very poor in quality. However, I’ve read a lot of great self-published books that are just as good (If not better) than traditionally published books.  I’ll be honest though and say I’ve read some terrible self-published books that were either poorly edited or just bland. If you go the self-publishing route, hire an editor. That is one of the most important things I’ve learned from my experiences.

Which kind of music do you listen to?

Metal, Hard rock, Alternative Rock etc. I enjoy listening to film scores as well. Recently I have been listening to the soundtrack for Mad Max: Fury Road. Epic score and epic film.

How’s your writing style?

I’d say detailed but simple? I try to make my writing easy to understand but at the same time I do not want to insult the readers’ intelligence.

What is the book you always keep close, and why?

The Bighead by Edward Lee. Edward Lee is one of the authors responsible for making me want to write.

Do you have projects in mind?

I have a lot of ideas in my head that I am still trying to get out on paper. A Love Not Deceased was one of them. I had the idea for that book for years.

YOU CAN PRE-ORDER IT NOW!!

What will the horror readers find in your book?

A dark, twisted and gory good time! With a love story put in for good measure.

What is the most important thing you’ve learnt in life?

To enjoy it and not take it for granted. I honestly spent so much time wishing I could do this and wishing I could do that. You just gotta do it! Otherwise, that shit will never get done.

Ironman or Hellboy?

Hellboy all the way!

Do you have a lifetime dream?

I would love to see one of my books made into a film one day. I really feel like A Love Not Deceased would make an interesting film.

How would you define your evolution as a writer?

I feel like I have learned over the years how to tell better stories. When I first started out I simply wanted to shock people. In A Love Not Deceased, I feel like I found a nice balance.

Do you have any advice to new authors?

Listen to criticism no matter how harsh it can be. It can really help you evolve and become a better storyteller. At the same time, never stop writing if a few people do not like your work. You should be writing because you enjoy it not just to please everyone.

Having a good editor and good book cover can go a long way.

What would be your aspiration as a writer?

Simple, to tell stories and have people enjoy (hopefully) them for years to come.

Did you have a favourite book when you were a kid?

I loved the Goosebump books when I was in Grade School. Like a lot of kids in the 90’s I had a ton of them!

What do you love?

  1. Girlfriend
  2. My Family and Friends
  3. Horror
  4. Beer

Which one is the mistake you would avoid now, looking back in time?

I did not have an editor for Darkness, my first book. That was a hell of a rookie mistake! I also wish I had decided to start putting my work out there a lot sooner than I did.

What do you do when you have a writing block?

I step away from whatever I am working on and give it room to breathe. The worst thing you can do sometimes is force yourself to write when you’re not feeling it.

What’s your favourite quote and why?

“The only way to get rid of my fears is to make films about them.” -Alfred Hitchcock.

I apply that logic when I write.

Do you have a favourite artist?

Clive Barker has some interesting art.  I also really love the artwork in the old Tales from the Crypt Comics.

Where can your readers find you?

I am on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/eric.kapitan/  I  am on Goodreads and Instagram as well.

How is your writing process?

I sit down at my computer and look at the white page as the cursor blinks mocking me. I surf the web for an hour or so watching funny cat videos or other randomness. A couple hours later I usually have a page or two written.

What is the best time of the day for you to write?

Anytime! Whenever the mood strikes! Much like in love.

Can you tell us something about your next book?

It is a short story collection but with a bit of a twist. It’s Going to be a mixture of real-life and fiction.

Wine, tea or coffee?

Coffee. I need my caffeine

Continue the sentence: “At the end of the world…”

I will be sitting there with my coffee, hoping that I can still watch King of the Hill on Hulu.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My family has always supported everything I do and they are 100% behind my writing. My biggest fan is my girlfriend Melanie, who has helped me so much. She pushed me to finish A Love Not Deceased.

Have you found rocks on the way in your career as a writer?

Of course,  I work a full-time job and have responsibilities which can make it a challenge. Sometimes after working a 45-50 week, it can be difficult to write but I try and push myself. When you want something bad enough, you get it done no matter what.

Do you consider other formats like screenplays, graphic novels or video games for your books?

I would love to someday make a comic book. It is just a matter of finding the right artist to work with. As I stated before, having one of my books made into a film would be absolutely amazing.

Thank you!
