Interview with Douglas L. Wilson – Un-pretentious. Eclectic. Telling a story around a campfire.

Which one was the first piece you wrote?

That’s a tricky question. My first book was a 360k word meganovel that I called Angel Rising. I couldn’t get it published because of the length, and because it wasn’t very good, so I canabalized it into three separate novels. The first of these was Affinity’s Window.

Can you describe your book in a couple of lines?

Fast-paced. Modern-day, vampire adventure. Supernatural thriller (not pure horror).

What is the book you always keep close, and why?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I read these as a child and they’ve always spoken to me on another level. No matter what I write, or what I read, I always return to Mordor.

Do you have an inspiration source?

Not a specific source. There’s no particular muse for me. I just like to tell stories.

What are your current projects?

I just finished the third and final book in my Affinity’s Window trilogy, called Ascension. It still needs a final polish, and then off to editing. I also have two novels I’ve been toying with, just partially written stories that keep changing, but I stay after them. Sometimes they’re like errant children. But sometimes, so am I.

Which kind of music do you listen to?

Classic rock and roll. Boring, right?  I’m an old school guy. I’m also an old guy. The two go hand in hand.

What kind of reader is your book for?

The kind that likes to turn the pages. I like to write for the lover of supernatural thrillers, the Stephen King fan, but I like my books to move along a fast pace.

How would you describe your style?

Un-pretentious. Eclectic. Telling a story around a campfire.

What would be your advice to new authors?

I still consider myself a new author. I guess one thing I would tell them, and tell myself, is to read and study everything written by your favorite author. See how they do everything they do, from story layout to dialogue. They’re your favorite for a reason.

Which one is the mistake you would avoid now, looking back in time?

There are too many mistakes to name. It’s all a learning process. The best way to learn is to recognize your mistakes, correct them, and move on. Don’t dwell on mistakes. That will sink you.

Thank you!

About the author

Born and raised in Northern Virginia, I’ve spent over 35 years in the construction business as a mechanical contractor. Forced from the industry by health concerns, I’ve spent the last six years following my true passion, writing. I’ve always been a storyteller, just ask those closest to me and watch for the eye roll, but I’m finally putting down on paper what’s been trapped inside me these last 57 years. I enjoy reading supernatural thrillers above all else, and we can blame The King for that, so that’s the genre in which I work. I hope you will give my rough style and layered plots a chance. Let me tell you a story.
