Tapestries of Terror.  That record introduced a dark and cinematic sound inspired by the soundtracks of classic Horror cinema by legends of Neoclassicism, Expressionism, Serialism, and Atonal composition, and experimental Electronic, Dark Ambient, Prog, and Post-Industrial.

Since Tapestries of TerrorCucurbitophobia has released an impressive volume of work, including 6 full-length LPs, 3 EPs and a string of singles. The project is the result of in depth study of all things instrumental and terrifying. The composer spent years studying the intricacies and compositional techniques of his favorite soundtracks from Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Adventure themed movies and video games.

“The Harbinger ” is the latest release from Cucurbitophobia, released via Bandcamp. A solo piano opens the piece with. Deep bass keys rumble as dissonant upper register chords set a dark mood. At around the 1:45 mark ambient synths, minimalist percussion and sound effects enter the mix, adding to the mystery. Unexpected key changes and complex melodic structures add to mystery. Cucurbitophobia paints a stark scene. It is an unsettling and hypnotic piece of music.

“The Harbinger” is a Dark Ambient piano based work. It portrays a return of an ominous figure who has disappeared after a long absence. The Harbinger bears knowledge, wonder, and dread, as it can shapeshift into the absolutely desirable or the utmost undesirable in the eye of the beholder. Able to predict and summon future events, The Harbinger has left everyone frozen in fear, knowing the inevitable yet not knowing when it will happen.

ABOUT CUCURBITOPHOBIA

Specializing in Horror themed music, Cucurbitophobia (which means “the fear of pumpkins”) is a journey through the malevolent and the majestic; a thrust into an existence witnessing the stark brutality and stunning beauty that nature has to offer.

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Robert Benaquista (aka Rob Benny) set out on a journey to create music that echoed many of his favorite Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Adventure themed movies and video games. Through deep analysis of scores and soundtracks coupled with his formal education of 20th century music, Rob began produce serious music in the Horror genre as early as 2010.

Classically trained and skilled on various instruments, Rob drew his main influences from contemporary Horror film composers, visionaries of Neoclassicism, Expressionism, Serialism, and Atonal composition, and experimental Electronic, Dark Ambient, Prog, and Post-Industrial musicians.

Over the years, after many stops, restarts, and improvements along the way, Cucurbitophobia finally came together in 2018 with the release of Tapestries of Terror. Since 2018, Rob has recorded and released 6 full length Cucurbitophobia albums, three E.P.s, and a collection of singles geared towards passionate enthusiasts of music embellished in darkness.
