“DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN” by Jim Goforth

If you’re at all familiar with the name Dave Ingram from extreme metal circles, then it’s a fair bet that you’re somewhat versed in his decade’s worth of work with Benediction, or perhaps, the untouchable Bolt Thrower.

Of course those aren’t the only acts the man has been involved in; he’s had plenty to do with numerous others, remaining active since the early 90s, but even the casual metal fan, extreme or otherwise would have some knowledge of those legendary names.

Both are premier acts with career longevity and consistent levels of quality output, and one would be hard-pressed to find too many other bands that stand up as true cornerstones and representatives synonymous with UK death metal.

Needless to say, Ingram’s pedigree cannot be disputed.

He has had a big hand in some of the most revered death metal bands under the sun, and though his lengthy tenure with Benediction ended at the tail end of the 90s, and his time with Bolt Thrower mid-2000, he certainly hasn’t been sitting around idle.

In between bands, he launched into radio programs and podcasts, including the long running and widely lauded Metal Breakfast Radio which has a strong focus on underground bands, featuring new music and helping to shine a light on some of those acts which might not otherwise receive too much in the way of attention.

A Metal show unlike any other!
David Ingram (Down Among The Dead Men, Echelon, Ursinne, ex-Hail of Bullets/Bolt Thrower/Benediction) and Bob Thunder (ex-Evil/Ripe) along with Kent Diamond Damgaard, bring you a weekly dose of Metal scrutiny, as underground bands run the gauntlet for about 2 hours each week. With ghost appearances by Donovan Spenceley.
Opinionated banter, with plenty of frosty ale. And sometimes whiskey.

CAVEAT AUDIENS!

A string of bands occupied Ingram’s time until 2013 when a new beast was spawned. This fiendish entity, brought about by a monstrous meetings of minds with prolific Swedish musician Rogga Johansson (perhaps best known for the likes of Ripspreader and Paganizer, though his list of credits is extensive) is Down Among the Dead Men.

Given the lineage of the members (Johansson’s Paganizer cohort Dennis Blomberg was also on hand in the band’s initial stages) one might expect that Down Among the Dead Men are straight forward exponents of death metal, and essentially that is true, but these merchants of brutality also meld their chief genre with crust in an unholy union that works insanely well.

Dropping a debut album in their first year of inception, and then following it up with another a couple of years later, demonstrated that this new entity would have no problem delivering both regular and quality output, and proving that Down Among the Dead Men is more than capable of being equal to the sum of its parts. Both of these platters are unrelenting powerhouses of aggression with tracks that are short, sharp body blows delivered with the impetus of a speeding locomotive and the devastating power of a wrecking ball, and even after years of unleashing some of the most ferocious vocals committed to record, Ingram’s inhumane growls are still sounding spectacular.

And now, in 2018, it’s time to be afraid once more. Be very afraid.

Not only is Dave Ingram delving into new explorations with the likes of Echelon and Troikadon, but he and the brutal collective known as Down Among the Dead Men are gearing up for war once more.

The outfit’s third album, …And You Will Obey Me has just been unleashed, storming out of the gate like an unstoppable juggernaut, and the heavy power evident in the earlier albums is eclipsed by what’s on display here. This is akin to having your head jammed into a cement mixer prior to being stampeded over by a herd of pissed off rhinoceroses.

Ingram is in fine voice once more, there is melody married to the relentless brutality, and a veritable feast of riffing underpinned by formidable rhythms drives this latest offering through one savage half hour of musical mayhem. Death metal and crust head butt one another throughout in an aural assault that has Ingram and Johansson building on what came before it and stepping up the game immensely.

If you’re into any single one of the plethora of bands these supreme musicians have previously been involved in (or currently are), or just dig relentless, infectious death crust power, or adroit musicianship in general, then you need to wrap your ears around …And You Will Obey Me. I can’t promise you won’t have your head completely disassembled by the raw, inexorable brute force, sheer vocal power and eerie twists of melody on display here by the time this record has bludgeoned its way through your system, but you’ll be digging every minute of it.

Dave Ingram has spoken once more, and you will obey him.
