Horror Author Interview!! Meet Christopher Law

Define yourself in two lines.

I’ve been described as bleak, disturbing and often brutal. Definitely not for children or the squeamish.

What was your first work as a writer?

My first published story was ‘The Shelter’ in an anthology called ‘Zombies Need Love Too’ way back in 2013. I have recently rewritten it. I’ve never been entirely happy with it so recently rewrote it, which you can find in the revised edition of Chaos Tales I, my first solo collection.

What are you working on right now?

Amongst other things I’m currently trying to focus on Chaos Tales III: Infodump. It’s a collection of interlinked short stories set in my own version of Hell, which isn’t too dissimilar to the modern world.

Coffee, tea or wine?

Coffee and wine, although I can’t have either in great quantities because they have a terrible habit of giving me migraines.

What is the worst and best part of the writing process?

The worst part is hacking my way through the final revisions before publication, when I’ve lost all faith in my own abilities and can’t stand the story itself. The best part is either finishing the first draft or publication, I really can’t decide.

Tell us a quote you love and why.

I’m not a great one for quoting things, if only because my memory is rather disorganised and I always get quotes wrong when I try. If pushed, however, I’d have to go for ‘Have a good time, all the time’  from This Is Spinal Tap because it’s a good thing to strive for, even if it can’t really be done. One of my favourite non-fictional bands, Carter USM, also uses it at the start of one of their songs.

What is your life’s philosophy?

Try to stay balanced, never foolishly optimistic or overly cynical.

Tell us about your work, which titles you have published and where to find them?

So far I have published two solo collections – Chaos Tales I and Chaos Tales II: Hell TV – which are both available through Amazon. I have also appeared in a number of anthologies, mostly with Burdizzo Books, which can also be found on Amazon.

What is a mistake you wouldn’t make again as a writer?

Trying to be funny in my covering letters with submissions. It’s a rookie mistake and I definitely made myself look like a fool before I learned not to do it. It doesn’t help that, as a person, I tend to resort to jokes whenever I’m feeling nervous.

Batman or Spiderman?

Batman.

If you found a winning lottery ticket, what is the first thing you would do?

Clear all my debts and those of my family and close friends.

What inspires you?

The friendships and support I’ve found in the online horror community, particularly on Facebook, which can be a pretty awful place otherwise.

What do you love?

Heavy metal, cats and stories with unhappy or tragic endings. There’s nothing quite as satisfying for me.

What do you hate?

The general state of the world at the moment. I’m a bit of a hippy, the horror stories and face-shredding metal bands aside, and it really is awful the state we’ve got ourselves in over the last decade or so.

Where can readers find you?

On Facebook:

I’ve just noticed I’ve gained a few likes over the last couple of weeks – really should check-in more often!
Happily, I’…
