Horror Author Interview!! Meet C.A. Verstraete @caverstraete

Define yourself in two lines.

Only two? Ha! Writer, miniaturist, dog lover, horror fan, journalist, and more!

What was your first work as a writer?

Writing for the college newspaper.

What are you working on right now?

A mystery and some strange short stories.

Coffee, tea or wine?

Tea, definitely. English, preferred.

What is the worst and best part of the writing process?

The best part is coming up with an unexpected new idea or writing something you like. The worst? Writing stuff you have to erase. But the synopsis probably tops that. Ugh.

Tell us a quote you love and why.

“Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” – attributed to Groucho Marx.

Books and dogs, gotta love both of them.

What is your life’s philosophy?

Don’t get yourself twisted up in knots about stuff you can do nothing about. Although I do repeat this old saying a lot, you can’t get blood out of a turnip.

Tell us about your work, which titles you have published and where to find them?

I love twisting things around, which I did when I gave Lizzie Borden, a reason to have killed her father and stepmother – they turned into zombies in Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter. The story continues in Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter 2: The Axe Will Fall. I also tell the story of how the murders and Fall River’s past affected Lizzie’s doctor  and neighbor (who was the first professional on the murder scene) in The Haunting of Dr. Bowen, A Mystery in Lizzie Borden’s Fall River

I also enjoy writing short stories and have been having fun writing some 100 word “drabbles.” Recent stories have been published in 100 Word Zombie Bites and coming in 100 Word Bigger Zombie Bites from the Reanimated Writers Press. Fun covers, too! (Book 2 cover will be revealed soon!).

What is a mistake you wouldn’t make again as a writer?

There are many pitfalls along the way. One is, beware of very small publishers. Been burned by quite a few.

Batman or Spiderman?

Spiderman, though I really am a Superman fan.

If you found a winner lottery ticket, what is the first thing you would do?

Cash it. Depends how big it is to determine what I’d buy.

What inspires you?

Wonderful art, beauty in nature, animals, good stories I wish I’d written! Yes, you can have good in horror. There has to be good in there somewhere for the character/s to be redeemed from.

What do you love?

Animals, creating, yes, even writing sometimes.

What do you hate?

Lying, cheating, unkindness, the horrors in government.

Where can readers find you?
