“Hollow” by Tina McFarlane

As your words
when you say I love you
Your lips taste
of bitter fruit

They sing the songs
of vultures and crows
who caw and yell
as they pick at the carcass
of what was

So empty
yet I grasp at it
in desperation

So terrified
of being left without
I would rather have
a full lie
than an empty truth

Am I so weak?
So wanting for something
Anything
I hide my shame
Behind giggles and smiles

And soon find
that my own life
has become hollow
