Hell Squad 2: Fresh Meat” – A Micro-Budget Horror Triumph in Raleigh, NC

In a remarkable display of ingenuity and passion, local filmmakers Grayce Anne Mosier and Carter Bentley have completed their first feature horror film, “Hell Squad 2: Fresh Meat,” using old-school cameras and practical effects on a micro-budget. This feature serves as a sequel to their 26-minute short film “Hell Squad,” which premiered on YouTube in October 2023.

“Production for ‘Hell Squad 2: Fresh Meat’ wrapped in May 2024, with plans for a late August 2024 premiere before heading to various film festivals. This swift turnaround, just five months from start to finish, is impressive considering the filmmakers relied on North Carolina University students and local actors. The film captures the spirit of straight-to-video horror, emphasizing a quick, budget-conscious approach.

The story centers around Janey, a young cheer captain portrayed by NCSU student Cassidy Petrykowski. Janey, a survivor of a previous year’s serial killer attack, must once again unmask a new killer before it’s too late. The film delves into themes of survival and resilience, set against the backdrop of a slasher horror narrative.

Co-Director and Producer Grayce Anne Mosier highlighted the unique atmosphere on set, fostered by the cast and crew’s voluntary participation: “There is a certain atmosphere on set when everyone is there because they want to be, not because they’re being paid. We opened up our home and said, ‘Let’s make something together,’ and it ultimately created this earnest community of very talented people who, for the most part, had never had the opportunity to be on a set before.”

Mosier also noted how the budget constraints influenced the film’s aesthetic, contributing to its 1980s/VHS look. The use of a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV38 and a 1973 Bauer C5 XL Super 8 camera provided an authentic, nostalgic feel reminiscent of classic horror films like “Girls Nite Out” (1982), “The Evil Dead” (1981), and “The House on Sorority Row” (1982).

“Hell Squad 2: Fresh Meat” exemplifies how creating a quality film doesn’t require a massive budget. The dedication and enthusiasm of the team are palpable in every frame, showcasing that passion is the most crucial ingredient in filmmaking.
