FLASH TERROR 250 Contest – “And the Darkness Sang” by N. Heinz

Time stood still as I opened the rusty door to an old, banged up warehouse. It was a gray day, raining on and off, and I’d been bored when I stumbled upon this place. I looked back one more time, catching a glimpse of my bike parked against the trees and foliage across the road.

Darkness but not total darkness stretched ahead as I realized there was no way to prop open the heavy, falling apart door. I could still make out a hallway, leading to another hallway. Good enough, I thought to myself. Exploring was my second nature.

You’d think I was a teenager again, when in truth I’d just celebrated my thirtieth birthday last month. But I couldn’t help myself, so I walked further inside, watching my steps at the same time. The ground was uneven, crusted over with dirt.

I felt myself on the verge of discovering something, in fact I’d felt it since this morning. You know that feeling, like something big was bound to happen. That feeling intensified as I walked down a third hallway.

It was the smell, that was my first clue. Then I heard voices, like a whisper and then shouting. “Turn back” churned in my gut, but something else pushed me forward.

It was then that the shadows took me, for when I woke up again I was freezing cold, surrounded by other people…their bodies. Hooked and hanging, lifeless eyes stared back into mine, their internal organs completely missing.

I screamed.
