DARK POETRY – “Sometimes I just can’t people” by Tina McFarlane

I try to put on “the smile”
but patience worn thin
by insecurities

sometimes I just can’t “people”

I crawl inside
in the tiniest spot
of the darkest corner
and scream so loud
it makes my head ring

sometimes I just can’t “people”

Music so loud
it drowns out all thoughts
of logic and being adult
because

sometimes I just can’t “people”

You say hi
and I meet your gaze
while mentally running
in the opposite direction
because the thought of
idle conversation terrifies me

sometimes I just can’t “people”

Online
with anonymity abound
one click and I scurry
in case someone sees me

sometimes I just can’t “people”

But it passes
like all things do
and my brain rewires itself
and my eyes seek companionship

My lips
once trembling at the thought
of chit chat
look to find a kindred spirit

My hands
unable to turn the key
that unlocks the online world
run frantic with GIFs and quips
because even though
sometimes I just can’t “people”

Eventually, it’s people I need
