DARK POETRY – “Last Dance” by Tina McFarlane

I wish that I could
take that step again
and move in time with you

but our bodies are off-key

the tune is only a memory now
whispers of notes float by
lost before I can hear them

although I still remember
how they felt
how we were
caught in
the music that was us

and now it’s quiet
gentle scrapping of tired feet
we move in silence
and touch without feeling

when did it all end?

The tempo began to slow
so gently
that by the time we realized
the music had changed
we were dancing solos

I could still hear you
but I didn’t recognize the tune

So, I give you my hand
and ask if you will join me
in one last dance

And as the final note
comes to a close
a gentle kiss on my cheek
before we part

And the wish
that in time
we will each find
a new song to listen to
