CADDY HACK: Movie Review By Matt Boiselle

Starring: Jake Foy, Chrissy Cavallo, Jim Gordon

Directed by: Anthony Catanese

You know what we haven’t had in quite some time? A good killer golf film…and we’re still waiting. Allow me to correct my statement – not since 1980’s “slobs vs snobs” comedy classic CADDYSHACK has there been a tin-cup movie worth mentioning (sorry, Kevin Costner) , and here we are some 43 years later…and what are we bestowed with? The answer you’re hunting for is CADDY HACK, a goofily-constructed take on that classic from decades ago – however, the only difference is that these gophers are large and rather pissed off. Let’s ride the death cart to the 1st hole and see if we can’t slice our way through this one with little bloodshed.

Directed by Anthony Catanese, the film is very much like the slapstick comedy presentation that spawned a (reprehensible) sequel, and we’re traveling the same dog-legged passageway with a golf course that’s drowning in debt and suffering from a slew of caddy murders at the bloody paws of genetically-mutated gophers. The only hope of overcoming this grotesque streak of rodent-ruthlessness are the actions of a moderately-unbalanced groundskeeper…as if you all had something else planned to watch tonight. It certainly doesn’t take long before the grass is strewn about, along with buckets of crimson and all the rationale that goes with it.

The movie isn’t wretched, per se – it’s just ridiculous enough to make you want to sit through all the nonsensical detritus in order to get to the kills, which are entertaining to an extent. Comedic instances are anything but – if you have to explain a middle-school joke to your audience after its delivery, it probably wasn’t worth the effort in the first place. Also, while the gore was slightly fun, the execution & calamitous way it’s displayed really isn’t something that should be analyzed – you just watch it, try to process it and move on – much like I attempted after the 72 minute run time (thankfully) screeched to a halt.

At the 19th hole of this one, if you’re a tried & true fan of teeing up, and you don’t mind a massive checkmark of inanity on your scorecard, then maybe CADDY HACK is for you – anyone else should pray for some extended time in the sand trap and wait for this one to pass on by.

At the tender age of 6, Matt was indoctrinated into the horror genre by his mother, who asked him to sit down and watch "The Exorcist" with her - ever since then, it's been a blood-soaked, neon-lit, fever dream of an existence. "You don't make horror...horror makes you." (Can't remember who came up with this quote, but he was probably off-kilter like I am).
