BOOK REVIEW – WARM by Eric Kapitan – Extreme horror book extraordinaire.

In this review, you won’t find a single spoiler or a description of the plot (I would never ruin a book). Let’s talk about what it’s going to make you feel, shall we?

I’ll go straight to the point: I LOVED this book. Now, let me get into detail, the author did a brilliant job sewing together different aspects and shades of “doom” which, I must say, it came up just amazing.

First of all, the concept of Devil and God. I like how Kapitan takes risks. He grabs the biblical story, turns it upside down and gives it a different meaning, a different… point of view. What we’ve thought or learnt, is all wrong. Nothing is as spiritual as it seems, it’s just a matter of war and how far are you willing to go to quench your thirst and satisfy your darkest desires. I even wonder if we’re talking about desires, because doesn’t it become something divergent when your yearning takes control of your own sanity? Doesn’t it modify into… a need? And here I go to point two. Are your needs more valid than the needs a sociopath, psychopath, brutal serial killer has?

Who’s going to adjudicate if you’re going to Heaven or Hell? The one who doesn’t judge you, or the one who might or might not want to share his space with you? I loved this concept: God doesn’t choose who’s worthy of Heaven, but who he doesn’t want next to him. Brilliant.

Also, I loved Satan’s inner dialogue. His thoughts and reflections. The author makes you feel his hate and somehow, understand him. What would you have done in his place? Keep this in mind while you’re reading this book.

On the other hand, the human factor: insanity. Where does your rationality end and the mirages start? How are you going to distinguish what’s good or evil, right or wrong if your nightmares hunt you in your wakefulness to the point of digging your own grave? Blocked memories, a fight in the name of someone you are not —or are you?

Love is shown in the most unexpected ways, and the psychopaths in this book turn it into a sick, obsessive fixation with their mothers and ‘relatives’. A nauseous addiction and aching for revenge (and… love?) which will break from the mortal world to the Golden Gates of Heaven to finally collide in the putrid intestines of Hell.

Finally, the “extreme” side of this story. You better have a strong stomach if you grab this book. BEWARE, kids, women and defenceless souls are tortured, raped, humiliated, beaten, broken. No one is safe, no one owns a salvation or a knight in shiny armour. No one can hide from… humanity’s malice and thirst for destruction.

This book is NOT for the easily offended. This book is NOT for those who can’t tolerate a good dose of blood, agony and disturbing, nightmarish images which will stick to your mind for a long, long time.

That said, I want to thank the author, Eric Kapitan, for taking all these risks. For not holding back harsh truths, brutal statements. For moulding this unmerciful metaphor of how the Devil lives in each of us and perhaps it’s not up to our righteousness if it takes control of us. It all depends on how broken you are and how deep your scars have ripped your soul.

And the end of the book… the end!!! Ah, you need to read it yourself to understand me.

This book has escalated to ‘my faves’ level with ease and I’m sure it will as well for the readers who can hold an extreme horror book extraordinaire.
