BOOK REVIEW by Alina Ionescu – “Dracula the Un-dead” by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt

It’s the season of Halloween and I am ignoring the sunshine in order to get into the creepy dark mood that I should have.

As a Romanian, I feel a personal connection with the legend of Dracula and the heritage of Bram Stoker. A few years ago I grabbed the Romanian version of “Dracula the Undead” and now, with the launch of the new novel by Dacre Stoker & J.D Barker I was returning to the first work of Dacre Stoker before starting on Dracul.

There are not many books that can transport your mind to another time and dimension just by using the images that the author paints with words. Dracula the undead is one of those books that lets you see an entire universe of humans and vampires with all the emotions and struggles in a new light true the eyes of the characters. Dracula, a relic from a time long passed fights for what he feels as being just and right. In his own way, he is trapped in a dark age of violence and bloodshed.

Countess Bathory is modern, with her scandalous androgynous look but her soul is trapped in the time when she herself was a mortal and was guided by human laws. Her blood thirst started in her life and continues in death… This story feels a bit like the sequel to Dracula and at the same time, it is not. The author duo is seducing our minds with dark words and delicious decadent image.

She is a woman that was attracted to other women even before she received her ticket to enter the world of eternal night. Her cruelty is pictured in a very visual way by the words of the incredible author duo, that catches all her traits, her evil side but also the evolution of events that turned her to what she became today, a monster guided only by the need of revenge against the entire World.

Spoiler alert:

One of my favorite scenes is the one of Minas awakening to new life, and the way she now sees everything around her, with her new vampire power. Another plus is the fact that we get to meet modern powerful female characters like Mina Harker and Countess Bathory. Both of them find freedom in their vampire self, freedom from the laws of humans and God. A wonderfully decadent and beautiful bloody novel in the tradition of Gothic novels.. Will make you turn your head next time when you hear something in the darkness…
